Financial Assistance

SLCM’s financial assistance is founded on pledges and donations from area churches and individuals. SLCM acts as a "screening" agency for those seeking assistance, and works to coordinate information and funds between clients, churches, landlords, and utility providers. This program is truly the mission of the churches, as it is they who are providing the assistance, while our E.A. social workers simply facilitate the process.
SLCM clients are eligible for one regular financial assistance during a twelve-month period.
Clients seeking assistance with church funds must call the office beginning at 9:30AM on the first business day of each month to set up an appointment.
We currently assist approximately 30-35 families each month with these funds, however, we receive almost 500 families requesting the assistance. Sadly, SLCM must turn away over 450 each month.
SLCM assists financially . . .
- with LG&E payments on brown bills, accounts that have had the service disconnected, or previous balances that must be paid prior to connection at a new residence.
- with payments for cut-off notices on water bills or accounts that have had service disconnected.
- with shelter payments where the client has received a late notice or eviction notice for rent, a late fee or a foreclosure notice on mortgage, or deposit/first month's rent due for new accommodation.
In addition, SLCM annually assists other agencies and organizations with additional financial assistance programs. Working in partnership with the Urban League, Community Action Partnership, and LG&E, SLCM distributes utility assistance through the Community WinterHelp program. This program seeks to prevent individuals and families from having their electricity and gas shut off during the cold of the winter months. Beginning in May each year, we work in partnership with Metro Human Services to distribute funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. These funds are used to provide payment for rent and mortgages.
